We know what works in our battle against Covid: vaccines. We tried lockdowns, we tried mask mandates, but numbers only started to drop to endemic levels in some areas when vaccination became mainstream.
"The UK seems to have peaked after a particularly brutal spike in infections. There are two critical takeaways from their surge. One is that they created the perfect storm for Delta spread. The Eurocup is a soccer tournament that took place from June 11th - July 11th, and England made it to the finals. I couldn’t create a better set of super spreader events if I tried. The entire country would cram into tiny little pubs and yell for two hours, and they did this every couple of days for a whole month!"
"Anti-covid vax sentiment on the right, by contrast, is fuelled by the country’s deepest divisions and the conservative entrepreneurs, in media and politics, who aggravate them. It explains why America’s vaccination rate has slowed in recent weeks, despite the availability of vaccines, an uptick in infections and deaths, and the fact that a third of adults have not received a first dose. Surveys suggest this large minority is overwhelmingly Republican. It represents half the party’s voters, predictably dominated by its most pessimistic and conspiracy-prone groups, white evangelicals and rural folk: the Trumpian base."
In this long-running competition, which has traditionally been the domain of academics, researchers predict the structures of proteins whose structures have been experimentally solved, but not yet made public.
With those results in hand we identified the differences between great and average listeners and analyzed the data to determine what characteristics their colleagues identified as the behaviors that made them outstanding listeners.
"What we can say is that the ecosystems at the end of the Cretaceous period were under significant pressure due to climatic deterioration and major changes in vegetation, and that the asteroid dealt the final blow. This is often the case in the disappearance of species: first they are in decline and under pressure, then another event intervenes and finishes off a group that may have been on the verge of extinction anyway."
"For example, we haven’t talked enough about vaccine mandates. They are a perfectly-acceptable answer that we have precedent for, and they can and should be deployed much more widely. About 40% of nursing home and long-term care staff are unvaccinated, for example—this should not be acceptable. But for that to happen, the FDA has to fully approve the vaccines as soon as possible. The safety data is there, and has been there, for two months now."
